I was here for dinner, opting to sit inside even though plenty were occupying the outside tables. That turned out to be a good idea as it rained soon after.
Anyway, this is a good place too get hearty German cuisine. Don't expect Michelin quality here but rather expect the traditional heavy and tasty cuisine. I had the pork knuckle which was absolutely filling. It's just how I expected it.
The staff was professional and curt but not overly friendly like in the USA. At least they don't feel fake you know? Service was prompt. I didn't wait too long for my food to arrive.
I do love this place- it's in the touristy area, but not touristy. The menu reflects the fact you are in Sachsen, plus it has several old Eastern-bloc (read Russian) dishes on it. The Sauerbraten is probably the best thing on the menu, although their version of Schweinsaxe was pretty good, too. It's nice to sit outside on the street, but sitting inside really takes you back to the old days.
Zill's is a secret gem of German food in Leipzig. I live here and whenever I have friends or business colleagues in town I avoid places like Auerbachs Keller that are overrun and touristy and take them to this almost hidden location. You can get all the old Saschen classics here, the staff is helpful and friendly and you get the feeling you are having dinner at a friend's house. Cant say enough good things.
